It may sound silly, but if using any form of a divinatory tool ( tarot, pendulum, speaking board, etc )
in a public setting ie.. outdoors in a park, cafe, library, etc.. would there be grounds for it to be illegal
and cause for problems?

just curious as I find myself wanting to practice using my tools in some public places..some where there may be
quite a few people.

I'm based in Los Angeles, Ca.

any thoughts??? ~A~

  • I have a friend who read Tarot at local pubs while she was honing her skill. One night club even hired her so they could offer the service to the clubgoers for free (and they often left gratuity, even though she wasn't doing it to make $).

We have also performed at outdoor festivals and farmers markets where folks were doing a variety of readings. I bet a coffee shop would be a great place, too.

ps. I'm in Wisconsin, now, but I recall folks doing readings at So Cal Ren Faire when I lived in OC as well.

By public do you mean free parks, beaches, etc that are under the jurisdiction of the City of Los Angeles or the County or the state? Cafe's, businesses, and other places that are owned by people are NOT public spaces and you must respect their space and rules because they pay the rent and it's their store or coffee house, etc. As a matter of ethics, integrity and respect I always ask and find a place that is conducive to this sort of thing.

You cannot legally conduct business in Los Angeles without a business license... that said there are always donations and trades which I think may be clauses.

I did a search at the city of Los Angeles web site and I did not find anything in particular about "divination" in a public space. I will ask my boyfriend later, he works in land use and planning and studies and works with similar sorts of issues.

    Be well,

  • You say..."would there be grounds for it to be illegal and cause for problems?" If you are within the business license etc law you are probably OK legally.... As for the would there be cause for problems".... given the Christians general assumption that all such divining things are works of the devil....the likelihood of "problems" magnifies. You might want to see if there are any laws BANNING burning witches in public places.....

Tho there are people who may turn away or walk out, generally in Los Angeles this is not a problem in the Urban/city areas. It is an international city. I've lived here as a psychic, witch and healer for about 6 years and before in 1998. I have never had any flack from "christians" who are just spiritual people too and there is nothing wrong with them. WE CAN all get along and those who can't we have an opportunity to mend. But I digress...

You will probably encounter that problem in areas outside of the city and further inland where people are exposed to less of the "different" and more of "the same" and so as a general rule have a different view of the world.

IN LA, make sure you operate under a business license, your's or a store owners. Report your earnings. Respect peoples space. Act with integrity, in the light, and be honest with yourself.

      Be well,

      Scott

      • Thank you ALL for the feed back.
The tools I use would be my own personal practice.
I should have stated this. If I do any readings it would be in
a quiet personal environment. No exchange of money, just to
        work on my practice.

Yes, Scott in Los Angeles I'd guess it would be fine to pull out my tarot cards.
Though a "talking board"? well maybe not a great idea though I don't use those
        at all. :)

I would ask first in a small cafe or similar environment.. don't want to ruffle any feathers
        with a business, etc..

Very cute comment looking if their is a law about burning witches still!

        • We ran into trouble reading Tarot over coffee/breakfast at Denny's here in Missouri. They didn't care that it was divination, they just had rules at their restaurant that people couldn't "play cards" there. *shrugs* I'd ask business owners or managers for permission if you're doing it at their place.

There is a law like this in Newark California, that is equally ridiculous.

Apparently massage is related to palmistry because you cannot practice any hand to body touch therapy (because Palmistry is touching/reading hands) without a special Newark California license.

            Eh?

So... though you may be a massage therapist, Reiki practitioner or other "Hands on" person, you cannot lay hands on someone in a professional manner (i.e. massage, Reiki, etc) without a special and only related to Newark, permit that costs roughly 2,000 dollars.

            let's all roll our eyes.

There are loopholes, faith healing + donation and you are cleared.

Cities that are more coastal and international have already worked through many of these backwards 1950's laws because someone has already worked to make it change, BUT it is always good to read, learn and know.

There is something in California that I suggest EVERY hands on healer get, it's called a "California Consent Decree Form". Clients sign it in acknowledgment that this is not a medical practice, they have been informed that it is a CAM therapy and so cannot sue or make claim of "you said I would be healed" form.

            in all things, CYA.

            Scott
