Looking for Guidance

topic posted Tue, February 5, 2008 - 5:34 PM by  alexander
I've dabbled in spell work before, I know it's not for the amateur and should not be taken lightly, what little I did try seemed to work a small amount, but I seek training.

I'm a university grad, which should tell anyone, that I'm not afraid of putting in the effort and the hard work. What little I could find in books, and on the internet, that wasn't complete garbage I read. But I'm hoping for so much more. I've always felt the world around us was live and awake, waiting for us to interact with its energies and

I'm not asking for a miracle, just someone who's willing to challenge me and teach me on how to practice and grow with the world around me.

Glad to know I'm not the only one. I've dabbled but I'm slightly apprehensive to do anything further because of the warnings.

What types of things have you tried so far? any recommendations? I'm trying to find something, anything lately to help me get the job I really want, something strong to help me (it's not a huge stretch to what I want, I have the credentials just want the extra boost) :).

      Alex.

P.s. I'll let you know if I try anything good that works well.

        alex,
you sound motivated and determined. Those are good things. Just don't think that because you 'want' something, that you deserve to have it *snap fingers*.
there's an old saying - "When the student is ready, the teacher will arrive." Think about what you want to achieve by desiring to increase your power, and remember - patience and hardship are good lessons to learn, too.

When you say "dabbled" my feathers ruffle, but I guess we've all "dabbled" a tad in our time. When a person is first in touch with themselves and aware of who they are, the world around them awakens other energies. Apparently you are experiencing this to some degree. A great way to become aware of more of the energies around you is to first practice becoming more aware of the "tingles" you have personally. Open your eyes to everything around you...you'd be amazed just how much more you will see. People have become so much like sheep in a herd, following the flow and barely noticing so many things that can almost be considered as "omens". Hmmm...could have a lot to do with the massive increase in crime rates all over the world.

I wish you could give a few examples of books you found helpful and books you thought were garbage. But here are a few of my thoughts:

A spell should have a very specific intention; it should not try to affect more than one thing at a time.

Avoid doing a spell to affect another person unless they ask you to do it. Even then, I'd wait until I was more experienced.

Not every spell will work for you every time. Sometimes a spell needs to be done more than once. Sometimes you need to find a different spell.

Learn how compose your own spells.

If it helps you concentrate on what you want, find the tools that you feel comfortable with in working a spell.

Personally, I would recommend reading any or all of Scott Cunningham's books.

Better than any book...go to your local "witch shop" or whatever they call them around your area and walk through and "fondle" things. Comprehend the energy you feel from each individual object. Those things that make you feel good are the things you want to have in your possession. From that point, learn more about THOSE objects and advance from there. If you lived closer I would gladly offer personal guidance, but never as a teacher. Witchcraft isn't taught by a book without first learning what your inner potential is. A teacher can only teach what he/she knows and studies herself, which may not be what's right for you. All those books make me cringe.

I agree... I'm also first starting my path, but the idea of learning this from books... shivers... too.. commercialized and.. well, I hate to say it, but Christian like. I need to create my own understanding of the world around me, not adopt someone elses', whether he's a grammy winner, author, mentor or parent.

I agree with Dragonfly. tribes.tribe.net/redwitch Silverstar Red Crow has posted her entire book on this tribesite and she is a teacher, Reiki Master, Shaman and true friend. There is a lot to be learned from this tribe site.
Also, Scott Cunningham. Get on Amazon.com and get "Wicca - A Guide for the Solitary Practitioner"; "Living Wicca - A Further guide for the Solitary Practitioner". Scott was one of the most amazing down to earth layman terms authors ever. As you start reading, more and more things that you've thought in your lifetime start coming together and all begin to make sense and you find you aren't crazy or alone in your thoughts and beliefs. "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Wicca and Wichcraft" by Denise Zimmermann and Katherine A. Gleason and "The Complete Idiot's Guide to Paganism" by Carl McColman are both very simple yet good guides for starting out. My suggestion to you is you start by reading and practicing alone until you feel comfortable and excited and CONSUMED by the very act of worshipping the Mother Earth and Luna Diana. And if you have the interest, you WILL become consumed. DO NOT run out and join any groups or "covens" or "witchy-wanna-be's" as that is all they are. You need to understand from where all the traditions originated 1,000's of years before Christianity arrived and how much of Christianity is nothing more than embellished pure and simple paganism. One book will lead you to another and there are none that are right or wrong; only different ways of celebrating life itself through paying respect to yourself, your fellow humans and the universe. Start collecting notes for what is right for you and soon you will have a "craft" that honors you and by which you may honor others. And when you ask yourself why you did not pursue this sooner, the simple answer is "it was not meant to be". I started reading like a fiend when i was 45 and haven't stopped since and will be 50 this year. I had read a little here and expressed a little interest there over the years but when the time came, I knew it and I can't learn enough fast enough. Good luck to you!
